If you want to run Cross Country in College expect the athletic commitment to require nearly as much time as the academic work load - basically 2 full-time jobs! And contrary to popular belief Division III Cross Country requires almost the same commitment of weekly hours as Division I. Developing efficient time management skills is key to becoming a successful student-athlete. Source: NCAA Goals Study

* NCAA scholarship limits per school apply to cross country and track & field teams  combined.  Cross Country and track & field are equivalency sports for scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can  be awarded to meet the NCAA  limit per school.  For example, an NCAA Division II school can award 36 female cross country (including  track & field)  athletes each an equivalent 1/2 scholarship and still meet the division limit of 18.   See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

**
Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

2018

The reason I had my kid start a college recruiting profile.

2018 Profile Summary:

CASEY O'ROURKE
Class of 2022
Saint *** School
Washington, DC

GPA: 3.1 / 4.0

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 155
Age: 14

Position: Point Guard

Points / Game: 15
Free Throw %: 80
Field Goal %: 55

2018 I had my son Casey start a recruiting profile in 9th grade to help motivate him to get better grades.

He's like thousands of 14 year old basketball players around the county: loves to play the game, plays on multiple teams and already has his eyes set on possibly playing in college. But like many kids his age he'll intently work on developing skills in a sport, but focusing on class work is well ... another matter.

When Casey began 9th grade this year he started a free profile with NCSA. He loves entering his game stats, videos and other athletic information, but it also became immediately clear to him that his grade point average will be just as major of a factor in his prospects of playing college basketball as his points per game average.

I don't know if my son will actually end up playing in college. He might lose interest in the sport, get injured or simply not have the skill set to play at the collegiate level.  But if part of his high school experience includes a focus on achieving good grades in the hopes of maybe playing in college, then maintaining a recruiting profile is a valuable tool at this stage of his schooling.

Whether you are an 8th grade runner or a 10th grade swimmer, starting a recruiting profile is an easy, free & effective way to help you focus on what college coaches are looking for in a student athlete. Full disclosure: NCSA is one of our site sponsors, there are several other reputable sites that also offer recruiting profiles free of cost. The ideal time to create a college recruiting profile is when a student athlete is in 8th, 9th or 10th grade.
